Social events and excursions

Bergen is located on the beautiful west coast of Norway with its fjords and mountains. Bergen is the second largest city in Norway (the greater Bergen area has a population of about 240,000 people). The centre of Bergen is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. There will be a half-day excursion on Tuesday 28th June included in the conference fee.

Bergen is a small city most of whose attractions are within walking distance of the city centre. However, Bergen's perhaps most exciting cultural treasures are actually outside the city centre. We have put together a tour that includes the best of them and is a really memorable experience. Join Fjord Tours on a day excursion outside the city to visit the homes of the world-famous composers Edvard Grieg and Ole Bull. We also stop at the Fantoft Stave Church, so that you can take a closer look at this beautiful building.

Troldhaugen - Edvard Grieg

Built in 1885, Troldhaugen was home to Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) for 22 years. Today, the house is a museum, and the furnishings are Grieg's own from 1907. The tour also includes a visit to the Griegs' tomb, the Troldsalen concert hall, Edvard Grieg Museum and the composer's hut.

Lysøen - Ole Bull

The unique villa and music hall, Lysøen, was built on the island of the same name in 1872 by Ole Bull (1810-1880), as a summer residence and meeting place for his many friends. The villa and its contents, rich in memories, have remained unaltered since Ole Bull's death at Lysøen in 1880. Guided tours are available and concerts are held there.

Fantoft Stave Church

The old stave church at Fantoft was originally built in Fortun in Sogn in 1150. The church was burned to the ground on 6 June 1992. Fantoft Stave Church has now been rebuilt as it was before the fire, and it is still an impressive sight.

After the conference

On Thursday 29th June it will be possible to choose among several full-day post-conference tours. The price of each will be approximately USD 120.
